Widely considered one of the charming, if not most perfect, musicals ever written, She Loves Me is an incandescent paean to love and ordinary life in all its charming unpredictability.
Set in an European perfume shop sometime in the 1930s, seven delightful characters inhabit a world suffused with love and longing. The central story of this romantic whirlpool revolves around two of the clerks: they feud daily, but unknown to them both, are romantic pen pals deeply in love with their unknown correspondent. Swirling tempestuously around this central couple, two of the other clerks have an all-too-knowing relationship, until the male peacock is discovered with too many curricular interests and the lady discovers the quiet joys of a more caring partner! A quiet and meek clerk shows unsuspected depths, an errand boy becomes an adult overnight and the aging owner of the shop discovers that youth has its drawbacks, despite the delights of nostalgia.
With a score by Fiddler On The Roof's Bock and Harnick that goes from strength to strength and a beautifully nuanced book by Joe Masteroff, She Loves Me is a perfect valentine to romance. And with its festive Christmas finish, what a wonderful musical to celebrate that holiday as well.
-"The book retains its elegant period charm, while the exquisite music and lyrics have the scented air of times gone and loves past."- New York Post
