by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee
INHERIT THE WIND is not history; it is a classic American play that fictionalizes the famous Scopes trial (sometimes referred to as the "Monkey Trial") The issues that were at the crux of that trial 80 years ago are springing up again today, creationism vs evolution, educational freedom and the freedom to think and express not only what you believe but even what you are not sure of. There are many interesting characters, most particularly the two attorneys ("old friends") who are now adversaries. The events which took place in Dayton, Tennessee during the very hot July of 1925 are obviously the basis of this play.
INHERIT THE WIND earned Lawrence and Lee numerous awards in the year after its production. The play won the Donaldson Award, the Outer Critics Circle
Award, the "Best New Play"- Variety Drama Critics Award in New York and London and was nominated for a Tony Award. Since its publication, the play has been translated into thirty languages.
